Sugar and Pixie Dust

Thanks to the wonderful Taylor, who has a blog about the Disney Career Start Program, has made a short questionnaire about somethings relating to this program. And now, here are my answers!

1. How did you find out about the career start program?

Well, I have to admit. Working for Disney was not something I had intitally thought about. I had always planned that I would, ya know, finish high school, go to college, and get a job. I was very close minded. So my life began to revolve around colleges, which isn't a bad thing. I had a few that I had applied to. (And I am still waiting on an answer from one) Anyway, I was on the computer one day, I don't remember what I was doing when I saw an ad for the Disney college program. I was curious because Disney has always been a big interest of mine. I like to go on Mouseplanet.com and read the Walt Disney World updates, I listen to a podcast, the WDW radio show, and I visit sites like yesterland.com, to gain a little background information on Disneyland and Walt Dinsye World. So I Read about the College Program and think "Hey, this is pretty interesting." So, I Incorporated it into my "Master Plan" Well, in early January, I receive a letter from the University of North Florida...."We're Sorry, but you have not been accepted...." So, back to square one for me. Felling bummed would have been an understatement. I thought that...I wasn't going to go to college. I began to look at the Disney college program with a longing. I didn't realize it, but I really wanted to do this program. I did a little bind digging and found the Disney Career Start program. Could it be? was it? YES! It was everything I wanted and more! It is like the Disney College Program, but with fewer jobs and fewer classes. But that wasn't a big deal for me. It was something I could do while I am thinking about other ways to get into college. Maybe I could do this program and go to a community college...who knows? This would just be the first step towards the next chapter in my life.

2. (If you get in) What are some things your not so excited for/nervous about?

Moving I want to move away, don't get me wrong. But, it's pretty nervewraking knowing that you might not be living here in a few months time. I mean, I grew up here, I have friends here, and family. And now I am going to a place where there is nothing but Mickey Mouse?? But I know that when I do come back home, I am coming home a stronger, more confident person.

Meeting New People I know this may shock some people, but I am an extremely shy person. I don't make friends that easily. So I think that this will be so great for me because I have already made friends!

3. What are some things you are very exited about?

Working Working at Disney will be so rewarding! I can't believe that I have this opportunity! I mean, after work or days days off, I can just, go to the Magic Kingdom for a few hours and then head on over to Epcot. That would be soooo cool!

New Friends lol It's something I am nervous about, but at the same time, I am super excited about! I mean, just the application process has helped me develop some new friends, and I know know people that are going though the same thing I am going through...

4. What is one little thing that you can't stop thinking about when you imagine doing the program?

It's got to be living with roommates. I've never had to share a bedroom before....lol. It's pretty cool. I mean, we learn about each other and develop friends ships, go to the parks, or to the beach. People say that you can develop a close bond with your roommates because you are around them for so long. I think that is awesome...and it's something I cant stop thinking about1

So...those are my answers! Thanks to Taylor for thinking of them! Very good questions! You should totally read her blog at http://taylor-spoonfulofsugar.blogspot.com/

And also, read Haley's blog at http://haleypixie.blogspot.com/ She's also going through the application process for the Disney Career Start program too! Good Luck to all of us!!!!!

Whew!

Whew! The stress is off! I had my phone interview last night. It was at 10:30, and I was soooo tired! lol But, I'm glad it was last night because if I had to wait any longer, I would've gone cazy! Anyway, so I'm pretty nervous when I answer ther phone, but I remember to smile and be as polite as possible. So, first off she begins to ask me questions verifying the information on my application. After that, she asked my why I applied. I told her that this would be a great experience for me and that it has a lot to offer me. "Excellent" She replied. She then asked me about living with roommates, how does that sound? I laughed and told her that i was looking foward to that! I began to relax a little bit as she asked me about my work experience, so I told her about that and the community service that I do. "Excelent!" She said, (again) She told me that I had a lot of experience. Then we went onto the jobs. She asked me which were my top three. I told her merch, attractions, and full service and dining. So then she asked me questions relating to those specific jobs. It was exciing and I felt more comfortable talking. At the end of the interview she told me that i sounded very excited and very professional!!!! I about fell out of my chair! I was so happy that she liked me! When I hung up the phone I couldnt stop smiling! So now I will be waiting three to four weeks before I hear if I got accepted or not! Cross your fingers everyone!

Overcoming Obstacles

Oh my goodness! This morning was so hectic! I checked my email (as I do everyday) and saw that I had an email from the Disney Careerstart recruiting team! They wanted to do a web interview! Naturally, I was very excited and I began my interview. It was set up in a very similar way as applying to a grocery store. Well, I was going through the questions, stating whether or not I agree with them, when a messege shows up saying that there was an error! Not now! I click the back button, but it takes me to the homepage. I log back in, give them my access code, and they tell me that my interview was complete and sent off! 'How could I be done?' I asked myself. I didn't get all of the information afterwards.' So I call the number that was on the website and I tell them my problem. The woman tells me that this similar situation is common and according to her, I did finish the interview and it was sent to Disney. I thank her and hang up the phone. I sit back and think for a miniute. I really dont think that I finished. I had that nagging feeling in the pit of my stomach that something wasn't right. So I call her back. I stress to her that something was not quite right. She was super nice about it. She told me not to worry and to try calling the Dinsey CareerStart recruiting team to see if they have recieved it. I thanked her and called them up. I repeat my situation and the woman from Disney tells me that she had, in fact, recieved my interview and that everything looked fine. I breathed a HUGE sigh of relief. She then asked if I was ready to scheduale my phone interview. I almost fainted. YES! YES! YES! I told her absolutely, and so it it schedualed for tonight at 10:30! It's a little on the later side, but I told her that I wanted to do it as soon as possibe. I'm extremely nervous. I don't have that much time to prepare. But I know that everything will be fine and to just relax and remember to smile. That shouldn't be to hard becuase I will be so excited! Please keep your fingers crossed! I will let you know how it goes!

25 Days

It's been 25 days since I sent in my application to the Disney Career Start program ad I have been waiting patiently. So, next week is when I should be getting an email for the web interview. I think that should be pretty easy. It's going to take like 20 miniutes to conduct the interview, then 4-6 weeks for the phone interview! All of the waiting is insane! lol But, it will all be worth it and I will begin an exciting chapter in my life in Orlando. I think that this will be a really good experience for me. Already I seem to be exiting out of my comfort zone. I have posted on a few messege boards and joined the group on Facebook. Like, I'm still doing my college applications and scholarship applications, but this is a one in a lifetime experience and I really think that this will be rewarding to me. I've been trying to keep my mind occupied by my college apps, schoolwork, and reading. I've been reading a lot. That seems to be the fastest way to pass the time. I can't help but be excited though.

A Brief history of Walt Disney World

In 1955, Disneyland opened. Although it had it's fair share of problems, it was extremely successful. Walt Disney wanted to expand his park, but the area around him had been bought and became riddled with hotels and restaurants, each wanting to take part in Disney's success. What bothered Walt the most though, was the fact that you could see the cheap hotels and restaurants from some of the high points in Disneyland. So, in 1959, Walt Disney began to search for more land. He found some in central Florida. The land was mostly used for cattle. Walt liked the land because it was easy to access, yet was on a private road. He also liked liked the central Florida location because the weather was similar to the weather in Anaheim. Walt bought the land a few pieces at a time, under fake names, such as "ayefour" and "retlaw/" Eventually, Walt Disney owned 46 square miles of land, and was ready to build. Walt had a few ideas for this land in central Florida, a Utopian community called "Progress City." Which later became EPCOT, and the town of Celebration.
Walt Disney passed away on December 15, 1966. Under his brother's control, they forged ahead. Soon, the Magic Kingdom was built. They also built a hotel, a campground, and a shopping center. Then, in 1981, the EPCOT center was built. It was based off of Walt Disney's idea of "Progress City." Then, in 1984, Michael Eisner became the CEO of the Walt Disney Company. This era brought many changes. Disney MGM Studios and Disney's Animal Kingdom were added along with Pleasure Island. The most controversial changes were the deletion of rides such as 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, and Mr. Toad's Wild Ride. People felt like the big CEO did not understand that many people liked the classic ride's simplicity. People got mad also because they thought that their replacements were cheap cop-outs. Eisner also had some good moments, such as the idea of expanding themed hotels. He also bought the Disneyland Hotel in Aneheim. But then, in 2005, Michael Eisner stepped down as CEO and Bob Iger was put in charge. He wanted to re-create the trust that the company used to have. Igner wanted Disney to go 'back to its roots' and he currently working to achieve this goal.
